AL-THAGR STREET AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT
STUDIO 6 PROJECT
JEDDAH
This studio project we were asked to explore the different methods available in urban design. The project contained two parts: the first being the urban phase which is redeveloping Al-Thagr district. The later being a single architecture design. In my case I decided on building a Cultural Academy as a method to help improve the culture and standard of living in the neighborhood. Where the architecture part was done as an individual project, the urban part was done as a group .

WHEN
Spring 2015
Our Main Concept is to respect the traditions of the area and incorporate sustainable methods and solutions. We aim to fulfill the peoples needs, such as adding a clinic to provide them with health care, an academy to help improve their education. We also
focused on their safety by making sure every building had a street for the ambulance and fire truck. We also placed a police station in the area to help reduce the danger and drug level in the area. The quality of the street has been improved, and the traffic has been reduced by making it a One-way street.

NEW PROPOSAL STREET
The main street has been converted to a one way street, therefore a new street has been
proposed near the area. This was done in an effort to reduce the traffic jams due to the heavy number of cars flowing through the district on a daily basis.
SAFETY CONCERNS
The Building inside this residential block had no clear access in case of emergencies so we opened a service street inside the block.
THE PROJECT
ARCHITECTURE PART
Design Descision:
We chose to introduce a Cultural Academy into Al-Thagar District for various important reasons. One being that the educational level of the people in the area is very poor, thus limiting their chances to work at a well supporting job. The aim of the academy is to equip its students with new useful skills that will help them support themselves. The connection of the academy to the Bazaar, helps to serve the people more because it enables the students to sell the products they made in the academy to help imporve their economic income.
In my design, the main concept is inspired from Islamic Architecture,
specifically the Madrasa. I chose it because it respects the overall style of the area. The main feature in the academy is the Central Courtyard containing multi-levelled seating areas and a central water feature. It serves to encourage the social interaction between the people.
