This program is held by the AA School of Architecture. Proposed across three years, the overall ambition of the visiting school is to compile a body of research about the city that lies beyond the holy mosque. We venture on a mission to record and represent both the visible and invisible landscapes of the city, to explore the everyday life of the inhabitants and the pilgrims, then speculate and imagine the future of the city, and to contemplate on what the future of this city holds. We seek to witness Makkah as explorers and dig deep into collecting and finding research and information. Over the course of the three years students will continually feed their research and findings into the VS Archive Library, which will be used as a resource for future students and eventually feed to a publication of findings from the conservative holy city. Lectures and round table discussions with leading figures from local authorities, architects, planners and designers will also be held as part of the visiting school’s overall agenda of discussing and raising the question of the future of Makkah.
